20.1 Overview

Annotations allow you to place important business events directly onto the AIUNIFY Analytics Dashboard chart.

Instead of looking at a traffic increase or decline later and wondering what happened, you can create an Annotation documenting the event that occurred at that point in time.

AIUNIFY Analytics labels this feature:

Chart annotations

and describes it as:

“View and manage all your chart annotations.”

When no Annotations exist, the system encourages you to:

“Celebrate & visualize your milestones directly on the charts.”

The basic workflow is:

Business Event → Add Annotation → Select Date/Time → Annotation Appears on Dashboard Chart → Compare Event with Analytics Performance

20.2 What Is a Chart Annotation?

A Chart Annotation is a named marker associated with a specific:

Annotation datetime

For example:

Summer Campaign Launched

at:

August 10, 2026 — 9:00 AM

When the Dashboard reporting period includes that date, AIUNIFY Analytics can display the Annotation directly on the Analytics chart at the corresponding point.

20.3 Why Annotations Are Useful

Analytics data explains:

What changed

Annotations help preserve context about:

What happened when it changed

For example:

Traffic increases sharply on August 10.

Without an Annotation, months later you may not remember why.

With:

Summer Advertising Campaign Launched

on August 10, the chart itself preserves the business context.

20.4 Common Annotation Uses

Annotations are useful for recording events such as:

  1. Marketing campaign launches
  2. Website redesigns
  3. New landing pages
  4. Product launches
  5. Service launches
  6. Promotions
  7. Pricing changes
  8. Email campaigns
  9. Social campaigns
  10. Advertising changes
  11. Major partnerships
  12. Press/media coverage
  13. Website outages
  14. Tracking changes
  15. Conversion-funnel changes
  16. Major business milestones

Annotations themselves do not change the Analytics data.

They provide context for interpreting it.

20.5 Opening Annotations

To manage Annotations:

  1. Sign in to AIUNIFY Analytics.
  2. Select the correct Website.
  3. Click Annotations in the main navigation.
  4. The Chart annotations screen opens.

The screen includes:

  1. Add Annotation
  2. Export
  3. Filters
  4. Bulk Actions
  5. Annotation Name
  6. Annotation Datetime
  7. Created/Updated information
  8. Edit
  9. View
  10. Delete

20.6 Annotation Availability

Annotations must be enabled for AIUNIFY Analytics.

If Annotation functionality is unavailable, the system redirects away from the Annotations area.

Your account may also have a limit on the number of Annotations available.

Availability: Annotations may depend on the features and limits enabled for your AIUNIFY Analytics account.

20.7 Annotations Work Independently of Tracking Type

The Annotation system itself does not require Advanced Tracking.

Unlike:

  1. Visitors
  2. Heatmaps
  3. Session Replays

the Annotation management source does not restrict the feature to Advanced Tracking.

Therefore, Annotations can provide chart context for the selected Website when Annotation functionality is enabled, whether the Website uses:

  1. Advanced Tracking
  2. Lightweight Tracking

20.8 Adding an Annotation

To create an Annotation:

  1. Open Annotations.
  2. Click Add annotation.
  3. The Add annotation page opens.
  4. Enter the Annotation Name.
  5. Select the Annotation datetime.
  6. Click Create.

The creation form contains exactly two user-configurable fields:

  1. Name
  2. Annotation datetime

20.9 There Is No Separate Description Field

An important interface detail:

AIUNIFY Analytics does not provide a separate Description field for an Annotation in the current user interface.

The Annotation consists of:

Name + Annotation datetime

only.

Therefore, make the Name descriptive enough to identify the event later.

20.10 Step 1 — Enter the Annotation Name

The first field is:

Name

This field is required.

Examples:

  1. Google Ads Campaign Launched
  2. Website Redesign Published
  3. New Pricing Released
  4. Summer Promotion Started
  5. Homepage CTA Changed
  6. CRM Campaign Began
  7. Website Outage
  8. National Press Coverage
  9. Product Launch
  10. Email Campaign Sent

Use a concise name that will still make sense months later.

20.11 Recommended Annotation Naming

A good Annotation Name should answer:

What happened?

For example:

Better

Enterprise Landing Page Launched

than:

Website Change

Similarly:

Better

August Email Campaign Sent

than:

Campaign

Specific names make historical chart analysis much more useful.

20.12 Annotation Name Length

AIUNIFY Analytics stores an Annotation Name up to the supported maximum used by the form processing.

The source limits the cleaned Name to:

64 characters.

Keep Annotation Names concise and descriptive.

20.13 Step 2 — Select Annotation Datetime

The second field is:

Annotation datetime

This represents when the business event occurred.

The date/time picker supports:

Year-Month-Day Hour:Minute:Second

and includes time down to seconds.

20.14 Why Annotation Datetime Matters

The Annotation Datetime determines where the Annotation is associated with the Dashboard's reporting timeline.

For example:

Campaign Launch

Annotation Datetime:

2026-08-10 09:00:00

When the Dashboard Date Range includes August 10, the Annotation can appear at the corresponding chart position.

20.15 Earliest Annotation Date

The Annotation Date Picker uses the Website's creation date as its minimum available date.

This prevents you from selecting an Annotation date before the Website existed in AIUNIFY Analytics.

20.16 Latest Annotation Date

The Annotation Date Picker uses the current date/time as the maximum selectable point.

The current interface is therefore designed primarily for documenting events that:

have already occurred or are occurring now

rather than creating future calendar reminders.

20.17 Step 3 — Create the Annotation

After entering:

  1. Name
  2. Annotation Datetime

click:

Create

AIUNIFY Analytics creates the Annotation for the selected Website and returns you to the Annotations area.

20.18 Annotations Belong to the Selected Website

Each Annotation is associated with the Website that was selected when it was created.

Therefore:

An Annotation created for:

example.com

does not automatically become an Annotation for another Website in your account.

Always confirm the Website Selector before creating the Annotation.

20.19 Annotation Limits

AIUNIFY Analytics checks the number of Annotations already associated with the Website before allowing another one to be created.

If the account's Annotation limit has been reached:

Add annotation

becomes unavailable.

The creation process also checks the same limit before saving a new Annotation.

20.20 Viewing the Annotation List

The Annotations table contains primary columns for:

  1. Name
  2. Annotation datetime

It also provides created/last-updated information and management actions.

Each row represents one Chart Annotation.

20.21 Annotation Name

The Annotation Name is clickable.

Selecting it opens:

Edit annotation

This lets you correct or update an Annotation after it has been created.

20.22 Annotation Datetime

The table displays the configured:

Annotation datetime

as a clickable badge.

Selecting the date opens the Dashboard around that Annotation's date.

This provides a convenient way to move directly from:

Annotation Record → Related Analytics Period

20.23 View Action

The three-dot action menu also contains:

View

The View action sends you to the Dashboard using the Annotation's configured date/time as the reporting context.

Use this when you want to quickly investigate the Analytics associated with the milestone.

20.24 How Annotations Reach the Dashboard

When AIUNIFY Analytics loads the Dashboard, it retrieves Annotations belonging to the selected Website whose:

Annotation datetime

falls within the Dashboard's selected reporting period.

Therefore:

Selected Dashboard Date Range determines which Annotations can appear.

20.25 Example — Annotation Inside Date Range

Suppose you have:

Website Redesign Launched

dated:

August 1

If the Dashboard Date Range is:

July 15 – August 15

the Annotation falls within that period and can appear on the chart.

20.26 Example — Annotation Outside Date Range

The same Annotation will not appear when the Dashboard is showing:

July 1 – July 31

because the August 1 Annotation falls outside the selected chart period.

This does not mean the Annotation was deleted.

Change the Dashboard Date Range to include its date.

20.27 How the Annotation Appears on the Chart

When Annotations are enabled and relevant records exist, AIUNIFY Analytics adds them to the primary Dashboard Analytics chart.

The chart associates the Annotation Name with the corresponding chart X-axis date/time position.

This places the business milestone directly into the context of the Pageviews/Sessions/Visitors trend.

20.28 Annotation Chart Label

The chart uses the Annotation Name as its visible Annotation content.

For example, the chart could include a label such as:

Google Ads Campaign Launched

at the appropriate point in the Analytics timeline.

20.29 Multiple Annotations at the Same Chart Position

If multiple Annotations fall into the same chart X-axis time bucket, AIUNIFY Analytics groups their Names together for that chart position.

For example:

August 10

could contain:

  1. Google Ads Campaign Launched
  2. New Landing Page Published
  3. Pricing Promotion Started

The chart can display those Annotation Names together at that matching position.

20.30 Chart Granularity Matters

The Dashboard may summarize Analytics at different time intervals depending on the selected reporting period.

Because Annotations are mapped to the Dashboard's chart labels, multiple events occurring within the same chart interval may appear together at one chart position.

The exact Annotation Datetime remains preserved in the Annotation record.

20.31 Annotations Do Not Create Analytics Data

Creating an Annotation does not:

  1. Create Pageviews
  2. Create Visitors
  3. Create Sessions
  4. Create Goals
  5. Modify traffic
  6. Change conversion totals

An Annotation simply adds contextual information to the Analytics chart.

If the Website has no relevant Analytics activity, the Annotation does not manufacture a performance trend.

20.32 Annotations Are Most Useful with Existing Chart Data

The Dashboard Annotation layer is rendered as part of the chart when Analytics logs are available and relevant Annotations exist.

Therefore, Annotations are primarily a tool for interpreting actual Analytics performance.

20.33 Example — Marketing Campaign Launch

Suppose you launch a campaign on August 5.

Create:

Name:

Facebook Lead Campaign Launched

Annotation Datetime:

August 5 at launch time

Later, the Dashboard shows:

  1. Traffic increases August 5
  2. Visitors increase August 6
  3. Goal Conversions increase August 7

The Annotation gives immediate context to the performance change.

20.34 Example — Website Redesign

Suppose a Homepage redesign launches September 1.

Create:

Homepage Redesign Published

Then compare Analytics before and after September 1.

Review:

  1. Pageviews
  2. Sessions
  3. Visitors
  4. Goals
  5. Outbound Clicks
  6. Heatmaps
  7. Replays

The Annotation provides the exact business milestone around which to perform the analysis.

20.35 Example — Pricing Change

Suppose pricing changes on October 10.

Create:

New Pricing Model Published

Then monitor:

  1. Pricing Pageviews
  2. Goal Conversions
  3. Outbound Clicks
  4. Visitor behavior

If conversion performance changes afterward, the chart keeps the pricing change visible as analytical context.

20.36 Example — Website Outage

Annotations do not have to represent positive events.

Suppose the Website experiences an outage.

Create:

Website Outage

at the appropriate Date/Time.

If Pageviews decline sharply, the chart now contains an explanation for that period.

20.37 Example — Tracking Configuration Change

Suppose you change an important Analytics configuration.

You can create an Annotation such as:

Tracking Configuration Updated

This can be useful if Analytics volumes change afterward.

Future reviewers will know that the measurement environment changed at that point.

20.38 Example — Advertising Paused

Suppose you stop a major paid advertising campaign.

Create:

Paid Search Campaign Paused

If Website traffic declines afterward, the Annotation preserves important causal context for future analysis.

20.39 Editing an Annotation

To edit an Annotation:

  1. Open Annotations.
  2. Click the Annotation Name,

or:

  1. Open the three-dot menu.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. The Edit annotation page opens.
  4. Modify the Name or Annotation Datetime.
  5. Click Update.

The Edit page contains the same two main fields:

  1. Name
  2. Annotation Datetime

20.40 Updating the Annotation Name

You can change the Name if:

  1. The original label was unclear
  2. The event needs more context
  3. The event was incorrectly named
  4. A better business description is available

After updating it, AIUNIFY Analytics refreshes the Annotation data used by the Dashboard.

20.41 Updating the Annotation Datetime

You can also change:

Annotation datetime

For example:

The campaign was originally thought to have launched at:

9:00 AM

but actually launched at:

11:30 AM

Update the Annotation to the correct time.

The changed Datetime determines its new association with the Dashboard timeline.

20.42 Created vs. Last Updated Date

The Annotations list also provides indicators for:

  1. Original creation date
  2. Last updated date

Do not confuse these with:

Annotation datetime

These represent different things.

20.43 Three Different Dates Can Exist

An Annotation can effectively have:

Annotation Datetime

When the business event occurred.

Created Date

When you added the Annotation to AIUNIFY Analytics.

Last Updated Date

When you last edited it.

For example:

Campaign happened:

August 1

Annotation created:

August 3

Annotation edited:

August 5

The chart marker still belongs to:

August 1

because that is its Annotation datetime.

20.44 Searching Annotations

The Filters menu allows you to search Annotations by:

Name

For example, search:

campaign

to find Annotations whose Names match the relevant search conditions.

20.45 Filtering by Date

The Annotation management filters can use different date fields:

  1. Created Date
  2. Last Updated Date
  3. Annotation datetime

This lets you search based on either:

when the record was managed

or:

when the business event occurred

20.46 Example — Find All Milestones from a Period

To locate Annotations with business events during a particular month:

  1. Open Filters.
  2. Set the Date Field to Annotation datetime.
  3. Enter the Start Date.
  4. Enter the End Date.
  5. Submit.

This is more appropriate than filtering by Created Date when you want to find events that actually occurred during the month.

20.47 Sorting Annotations

You can sort the Annotation list by:

  1. ID
  2. Created Date
  3. Last Updated Date
  4. Name
  5. Annotation Datetime

and choose:

  1. Ascending
  2. Descending

20.48 Results per Page

The Filters menu also lets you select how many Annotation records appear per page.

Pagination appears beneath the Annotation table when additional records exist.

20.49 Default Annotation Ordering

Your Analytics Preferences can include a default ordering choice specifically for Annotations.

Available default ordering fields include:

  1. ID
  2. Created Date
  3. Last Updated Date
  4. Annotation Datetime
  5. Name

This will be covered further in Chapter 29 — Analytics User Preferences.

20.50 Exporting Annotations

The Annotations page includes Export options for:

  1. CSV
  2. JSON
  3. PDF

depending on the export features available to the account.

20.51 Annotation Export Data

CSV and JSON Annotation exports can include fields such as:

  1. User ID
  2. Website ID
  3. Annotation ID
  4. Name
  5. Annotation Datetime
  6. Last Updated Date
  7. Created Date

This can be useful for maintaining an external record of important Website milestones.

20.52 Deleting an Annotation

To delete an Annotation:

  1. Open Annotations.
  2. Locate the Annotation.
  3. Open its three-dot menu.
  4. Select Delete.
  5. Confirm the deletion.

The action menu provides:

  1. View
  2. Edit
  3. Delete

20.53 What Happens When an Annotation Is Deleted

Deleting an Annotation removes the Annotation record and clears the related cached Annotation information used for Dashboard chart display.

It does not delete the Website's Analytics data.

For example, deleting:

Google Ads Campaign Launched

does not delete the Pageviews recorded during that campaign.

Only the contextual chart marker is removed.

20.54 Bulk Delete

The Annotations page supports:

Bulk actions → Delete

To delete several:

  1. Enable Bulk Actions.
  2. Select the Annotation records.
  3. Choose Delete.
  4. Confirm the action.

The system removes the selected Annotation records and refreshes the related chart Annotation data.

20.55 Team Restrictions

Team context can view the available Annotation information, but owner-level Annotation management is restricted.

The interface hides:

  1. Add Annotation
  2. Bulk management
  3. Row management actions

for Team context.

The creation and update controllers also block Team members from performing those actions.

20.56 Recommended Marketing Annotation Strategy

For marketing campaigns, create an Annotation whenever a change is substantial enough that you may later need to explain Analytics movement.

Examples:

Google Ads Campaign Started

Facebook Campaign Paused

Email Blast Sent

Influencer Campaign Launched

New Landing Page Published

Then compare performance around those dates.

20.57 Recommended Website Change Strategy

Use Annotations for meaningful Website changes such as:

  1. Homepage redesign
  2. CTA change
  3. Navigation redesign
  4. Pricing update
  5. Checkout change
  6. New form
  7. Landing-page redesign

This creates a permanent analytical reference point for evaluating before-and-after performance.

20.58 Recommended Business Milestone Strategy

Annotations can also preserve major business milestones:

  1. Product launch
  2. New partnership
  3. Press coverage
  4. Event appearance
  5. Expansion announcement
  6. New market launch

The goal is to preserve information that may explain changes in Website behavior.

20.59 Avoid Overusing Annotations

If every minor Website edit receives an Annotation, the chart can become cluttered and less useful.

Prioritize events likely to affect:

  1. Traffic
  2. Visitor behavior
  3. Conversion
  4. Acquisition
  5. Engagement

A practical rule is:

If you may ask “What happened here?” later, consider creating an Annotation.

20.60 Use Consistent Naming

For organizations with many Annotations, consider consistent naming patterns.

Examples:

CAMPAIGN — Google Ads Started

WEBSITE — Homepage Redesign

EMAIL — August Promotion

PRODUCT — Enterprise Suite Launch

ISSUE — Website Outage

AIUNIFY Analytics does not require these prefixes, but consistent naming can make the Annotation list easier to search and interpret.

20.61 Annotations and Pageviews

The primary Dashboard chart contains Pageview data and can display the Annotation at the corresponding time position.

For example:

Annotation: Campaign Launch

Pageviews increase

This provides immediate visual context.

20.62 Annotations and Sessions

For Advanced Tracking, the Dashboard chart also contains Session data alongside Pageviews.

An Annotation can therefore help contextualize changes in:

  1. Pageviews
  2. Sessions
  3. Visitors

within the same primary Dashboard chart.

20.63 Annotations and Visitors

The Dashboard chart also includes Visitor data where applicable.

For example:

New Campaign Launched

followed by:

Visitor growth

can be analyzed directly around the marked date.

20.64 Annotations and Goals

Annotations do not directly create Goal Conversions, but they can help explain changes in Goal performance.

Example:

Pricing Redesign Published

Goal Conversions increase during the following week.

Use:

Annotation + Dashboard + Goals

to investigate the relationship.

20.65 Annotations and Heatmaps

Suppose you redesign a landing page.

Create:

Landing Page Redesign Published

Then:

  1. Retake the Heatmap Snapshot.
  2. Collect new visitor behavior.
  3. Compare Scroll and Click behavior.
  4. Compare Goal performance.

The Annotation gives you the timeline reference for when the redesign occurred.

20.66 Annotations and Session Replays

Annotations can also help determine which Replays belong to:

Before

versus:

After

an important Website change.

For example:

Checkout Redesign — August 15

You can review Replays before and after August 15 to look for behavioral differences.

20.67 Annotations and Outbound Clicks

Suppose you replace your external appointment provider.

Create:

New Booking Platform Launched

Then review Outbound Clicks after the change.

This can help preserve context if click volume changes.

20.68 Before-and-After Analysis Workflow

A powerful use of Annotations is before-and-after analysis.

Suppose:

Homepage Redesign Published — August 10

Analyze:

Before

August 1–9

Change

August 10 Annotation

After

August 11–20

Then compare:

  1. Pageviews
  2. Visitors
  3. Sessions
  4. Goals
  5. Outbound Clicks
  6. Heatmaps
  7. Replays

The Annotation establishes the change point.

20.69 Annotations Do Not Prove Causation

If Analytics changes after an Annotation, do not automatically conclude that the annotated event caused the change.

For example:

Campaign Launched

Traffic increases

The campaign may have contributed, but other factors could also be involved.

Annotations provide:

Context

not:

automatic causal proof

Use other Analytics data to validate your interpretation.

20.70 Troubleshooting — Annotations Is Missing

Check:

  1. Correct Website selected.
  2. Annotation functionality available.
  3. Account feature availability.

The system redirects away when Annotation functionality is disabled.

20.71 Troubleshooting — Add Annotation Is Disabled

The account may have reached its Annotation limit.

The interface disables:

Add annotation

when the applicable limit has been reached.

Review existing Annotations and account availability.

20.72 Troubleshooting — Annotation Does Not Appear on Dashboard

Check:

Correct Website

Annotations belong to a specific Website.

Dashboard Date Range

The Date Range must include the Annotation Datetime.

Analytics Data

The primary chart needs applicable Analytics data to render its normal reporting visualization.

Correct Annotation Datetime

Open Edit annotation and verify the configured Date/Time.

The Dashboard retrieves Annotations only when their Chart Datetime falls within the selected report period.

20.73 Troubleshooting — Several Annotations Appear Together

This may be expected.

If several Annotations correspond to the same displayed chart time bucket, AIUNIFY Analytics groups their Names at that X-axis position.

Review each Annotation's exact Datetime from the Annotations management page if you need more precision.

20.74 Troubleshooting — Annotation Date Is Wrong

Open:

Annotations → Annotation Name

Then update:

Annotation datetime

and click:

Update

The Dashboard Annotation data is refreshed after the change.

20.75 Troubleshooting — Deleted Annotation Is Gone but Analytics Remains

This is correct behavior.

Annotations and Analytics records are separate.

Deleting the Annotation removes:

the chart context marker

not:

the historical Website Analytics

Your Pageviews, Sessions, Visitors, and other tracking data remain subject to their normal retention and management rules.

20.76 Recommended Annotation Workflow

For every important business or Website event:

  1. Confirm the correct Website.
  2. Open Annotations.
  3. Click Add annotation.
  4. Enter a descriptive Name.
  5. Select the exact event Date/Time.
  6. Click Create.
  7. Open the Dashboard.
  8. Select a Date Range containing the event.
  9. Confirm the Annotation appears.
  10. Monitor Analytics around the event.
  11. Compare performance before and after.
  12. Use Goals, Heatmaps, Replays, or other reports for deeper analysis.

20.77 Recommended Monthly Review

At the end of each month:

  1. Open Annotations.
  2. Filter by Annotation datetime.
  3. Review the month's important milestones.
  4. Open the Dashboard.
  5. Review performance around each event.
  6. Identify significant changes.
  7. Compare related Goal performance.
  8. Export Annotations if needed for reporting.

This creates a historical record connecting:

Business Activity → Website Analytics

20.78 Chart Annotation Checklist

Before relying on an Annotation, confirm:

  1. Correct Website selected
  2. Annotation feature available
  3. Descriptive Name used
  4. Correct Annotation Datetime
  5. Annotation created after the actual event when appropriate
  6. Dashboard Date Range includes the event
  7. Analytics chart contains relevant data
  8. Multiple same-period Annotations understood
  9. Annotation not confused with Analytics data
  10. Annotation not treated as proof of causation
  11. Important Website/campaign changes consistently annotated
  12. Old or incorrect Annotations updated or removed

20.79 Understanding the Complete Annotation Workflow

The AIUNIFY Analytics Annotation process can be summarized as:

Important Business Event

Annotations

Add Annotation

Name + Annotation Datetime

Create

Dashboard Date Range Includes Event

Annotation Name Appears on Chart

Compare Pageviews / Sessions / Visitors

Investigate Goals / Outbound Clicks / Heatmaps / Replays

Understand Performance in Business Context

20.80 What You Should Know Before Moving On

You should now understand that Chart Annotations allow you to preserve important business context directly alongside AIUNIFY Analytics performance.

Each Annotation contains only:

Name + Annotation Datetime

When the Dashboard period includes that Datetime, AIUNIFY Analytics retrieves the Annotation and displays its Name at the corresponding position in the primary Analytics chart.

Annotations can then be searched, filtered, sorted, exported, edited, viewed against the Dashboard, or deleted through the Chart annotations management area.

Most importantly:

Analytics tells you what happened.

Annotations help you remember what was happening when it happened.
